The Rolex triangle is a characteristic feature of the brand's watches. Originally, the triangular pitches on the outer bezel of the Oyster served a practical purpose, helping to secure the bezel to the case and ensuring the watch's water resistance.
The pitches visible on the caseback were designed for the same purpose and were screwed onto the case with a specific Rolex tool. The pitted triangle has since evolved into an aesthetic design element that has become a classic Rolex feature. The lacquer is capable of producing virtually infinite shades of colour, strength and smoothness. The lacquer technique consists of depositing six successive thin layers of lacquer on a brass backing.
It is then sprayed with colourless lacquer to give it a deeper and more brilliant tone or chromatic intensity. After the varnish has dried, the dial is polished to bring out the colours, before being pad printed and hallmarked with inlays.
